Directors play a pivotal role at Grant Thornton Stax by leading client delivery, developing talent, and helping scale the firm’s capabilities and impact.
The Work
As a Director, you will lead high-impact, short-term engagements for private equity firms and PE-backed portfolio companies. You’ll work across sectors including software/technology, healthcare, business services, consumer, industrials, education, and the events ecosystem.
Directors serve as the day-to-day client lead, owning engagement delivery and driving teams toward clear, actionable recommendations. Our teams operate with high ownership, direct client access, and real responsibility—without the heavy travel model common in consulting.
What You’ll Do
Directors at Grant Thornton Stax are senior leaders who drive client outcomes, team performance, and firm growth. You will:
- Own end-to-end delivery across engagements, setting direction across workstreams and ensuring insight quality and actionable recommendations
- Serve as the primary day-to-day client lead, managing scope, expectations, and executive-level communication
- Lead engagement planning and execution, including staffing, delivery cadence, and oversight of engagement economics
- Guide teams through analysis, synthesis, and quality control to ensure clear, defensible insights and client-ready outputs
- Be accountable for preparing and delivering presentations of findings and recommendations to clients
- Support scoping and proposal development, helping shape engagement approach and project framing
- Develop and mentor team members through coaching, feedback, and performance leadership across engagements
- Contribute to practice development through capability building, knowledge sharing, and firm initiatives
- Partner with Managing Directors and Partners to develop and grow client relationships and support business development
What Makes This Role Different
At Grant Thornton Stax, Directors gain the platform and autonomy to lead and the support and access to grow quickly. You’ll experience:
- Full ownership of client delivery, with Directors setting direction across workstreams and leading teams end-to-end
- Significant executive-level exposure, serving as the day-to-day client lead and driving outcomes with senior stakeholders
- A culture of mentorship and development, where senior leaders are accessible and invested in your growth
- Breadth of work across industries and deal contexts, accelerating learning and sharpening judgment
- A growing platform post-acquisition, with opportunities to shape offerings, build capabilities, and contribute to firm-wide initiatives
- Minimal travel (~10%), supporting a more sustainable consulting model without sacrificing impact
Qualifications
- 7-9 years of experience at a strategy consulting firm, with a proven track record leading commercial diligence and/or private equity strategy engagements
- Strong strategic thinking skills, supported by rigorous research, analytics, and working knowledge of consulting frameworks
- Demonstrated experience performing market sizing, competitive/market analysis, demand/supply or pricing analytics, and qualitative and quantitative research (including secondary research, web surveys, growth forecasting, and regression)
- Demonstrated ability to manage consulting projects end-to-end, including planning and managing multiple workstreams within tight timelines, while owning full engagement delivery and setting direction across workstreams
- Proven ability to manage, coach, and develop consultants and associates, including mentoring and leading team performance across engagements
- Strong written, verbal, and presentation skills, including the ability to structure outputs logically, frame ideas at the appropriate level of detail, and convey executive-level “big picture” messaging
- Advanced proficiency in Excel and PowerPoint
- Proven ability to liaise closely with and manage global project teams and senior client stakeholders, serving as the primary day-to-day client lead and managing scope, expectations, and executive-level communication
- Experience overseeing engagement economics and delivery cadence (e.g., timelines, scope changes) to ensure high-quality outcomes
- Demonstrated contribution to business development (e.g., proposals, scoping, relationship development) and practice capability building
- Strong ownership mindset and comfort operating in fast-paced, deadline-driven environments; high initiative and a roll-up-your-sleeves approach
- Detail-oriented, intellectually curious, and highly collaborative
- Ability to multitask and deliver high-quality work in a time-sensitive environment
